The Ministers to the Sick bring the comfort of Christ, in the form of the Eucharist, to those who cannot go to Church. We bring the Church to people who cannot physically come to Church. In this way, the sick and homebound are united to the Body of Christ present in our community. We continue the healing and compassionate ministry of Jesus as members of His Body. It is always in Jesus’ Name that we visit.
This is not a private but a public act representing the Church as an institution and a community. We minister to them in their homes, nursing facilities, or hospitals.
Our call as Ministers to the Sick is to be present to the patients as they attempt to find God in their life situation by listening to them. Sometimes it may just be a visit or a prayer the Minister can offer if the individual is not ready for Communion that day. Confidentiality, respect for the patient, and acceptance of them for whom and where they are are the gifts inherent in this presence.
This ministry provides training, and an experienced minister also mentors the new Minister to the Sick. The new ministers will also attend a training session presented by the diocesan Worship Office.
The Minister needs to be a baptized Catholic and a member of Immaculate Conception Parish who participates in weekly mass and personal prayer on a regular basis. They practice the art of listening and understanding with love and respect when they visit.
This varies greatly and will be determined according to the needs and schedule of the one visited and the Minister.
If you are interested in joining this ministry, contact: Maryann Hailey at (903) 948-2011 or [email protected].
If you have a homebound relative or friend who would like to be visited, please call the parish office.
Father, your Son accepted our sufferings to teach us the virtue of patience in human illness. Hear the prayers we offer for our sick brothers and sisters. May all who suffer pain, illness, or disease realize that they have been chosen to be saints and know that they are joined to Christ in his suffering for the salvation of the world. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
